I actually saw "Eddie and the Cruisers" on HBO in the early 80's. From what I remember it bombed at the box office, but became a big hit on cable. The soundtrack ended up selling 3 million copies.

I thought the movie was all right, it was watchable. It had a good cast, Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, and Joe Pantiliano. Some of the movie is far-fetched, though.

John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band actually had four hits from what I can find; "On the Dark Side" and "Tender Years" from the soundtrack, then two hits off their next album, "Tough All Over", the title track and "C-I-T-Y". "Beaver Brown" was the name of a paint color in the band's first studio, according to this website: http://www.dirtywater.com/a2z/c/caffertyjohn/

Cafferty took a lot of heat for being a "Springsteen clone". No record label would sign him before "Eddie and the Cruisers". I agree with what Dave Marsh said in 1985, "God, how come they never say that about Foreigner clones, those they gobble up."

After more research, the movie "Eddie and the Cruisers" is based on a novel of the same name by P.E. Kluge.
